Barcelona International Masterclass for Choral Conducting

11-15 July at Palau de la Música
by Simon Halsey & Maria Guinand

The Palau de la Música Catalana, one of the few concert halls across the world founded and built by a choir, continues its promotion of choral music by offering a new initiative addressed to choir conductors. The Choral Conducting masterclass is aimed at preparing choral conductors to work with professional level choirs and give them the opportunity to gain practical experience with a top-quality professional ensemble: the Cor de Cambra del Palau de la Música Catalana, our friendly and excellent in-house choir.

The masterclass will take place from 11th of July to 15th of July at the Palau de la Música Catalana, including a concert for the students on the last day at its beautiful main concert hall, which was awarded the “World Heritage Site” by Unesco in 1997.

Goals

The Barcelona International Masterclass for Choral Conducting will provide students with an opportunity to work with a professional choir and therefore gain awareness of what skills are needed at this level as well as training for them.

The masterclass will focus on:

— working on a variety of styles
— how to learn scores and communicate your desires clearly and concisely
— learning technique that shows from your gesture exactly what you are hoping to hear

What awaits you?

The first two days are reserved for working the repertoire with piano. The following two days will be committed to working the same repertoire with the Cor de Cambra del Palau de la Música. The final day will see the active students go on stage to showcase their work in a concert.

The classes will be hosted by Simon Halsey, Artistic Director of the choirs at Palau de la Música, and Maria Guinand, current Artistic Director of the Fundación Schola Cantorum in Venezuela and Adjunct Professor of Choral Conducting at the Florida International University.
